Jobs: Vertical Marketing Specialist (Regular Full Time, Exempt)

The Communications team at TechSoup is seeking a well-rounded writer, editor, researcher, and community builder to support ongoing communications and marketing work, and to lead new initiatives stemming from our rapid expansion.

TechSoup is a nonprofit organization that helps other nonprofits acquire and use technology to better serve their missions. We are working toward a time when every nonprofit and NGO on the planet has the technology resources and knowledge they need to operate at their full potential. Through our Website, nonprofits will find a broad range of software donated by leading tech companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Intuit, and Adobe, along with content and community forums targeted specifically at a nonprofit audience. The NetSquared conference and showcase social Web innovations that nonprofits can use to dramatically increase their reach and impact.

Working with partners around the globe, we’re actively expanding these resources outside the US. New initiatives at TechSoup include a program (funded by the Gates Foundation) to help public libraries better maintain their public access computers and an expanded Green IT program that aims to build the market for refurbished computers and other environmentally appropriate solutions. Founded in 1987 (as CompuMentor), we currently have more than 150 staff members and an annual budget of about $18 million.

Job Duties:

You’ll be responsible for managing projects, creating written materials, and driving outreach as needed to support TechSoup departments, projects, and initiatives. Work products will include short-form documents (such as press releases, one-page handouts, Web material, newsletters, ad copy, etc.), as well as long-form documents (such as reports and case studies), and marketing collateral.

On a case by case basis, these projects may include the following:
  • Original writing
  • Editing (including structural editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading)
  • Managing the editorial review process, reflecting multiple inputs from a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Fact-finding and research
Qualifications:

The Vertical Marketing Specialist will take the lead in developing materials targeted at specific sectors within our customer base and other constituencies. These sectors will include customers with particular social missions, geographies, or relationships with TechSoup. Additionally, this person will lead development of materials for our internal audience, with the goal of maintaining an informed and unified workforce, and identifying opportunities to cross-pollinate resources and opportunities.

The person in this role will also develop outreach programs that enhance our visibility in these sectors, generate products such as surveys and case studies relevant to a given sector, and fostering sector-specific community involvement among our customers.

Qualifications:
  • 5 years of experience as a writer, journalist, or marcom professional for a major publication or organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and should be able to effectively manage print and electronic projects that involve copy, design, interactive, and presentation elements.
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully initiating and leading new initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, matrix management environment, while maintaining a sense of humor and a can-do attitude.
  • Well organized, proven consensus builders, able to consistently deliver on deadline.
  • Enthusiastic about the mission of TechSoup and its customers.
The Vertical Marketing Specialist will report to the Communications Director.
