Staff Writer

TechSoup.org seeks an experienced writer and editor to join our Knowledge Services department to provide information and support about the product donations offered on TechSoup Stock for an audience of nonprofits and libraries. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to participate in a creative, collaborative environment and use their technology know-how and writing skills to help social-benefit organizations. The staff writer will work closely with the Senior Editor and Director of Content for Knowledge Services.

Through our Website, nonprofits will find a broad range of software donated by leading tech companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Intuit, and Adobe, along with content and community forums targeted specifically at a nonprofit audience. The NetSquared conference and showcase social Web innovations that nonprofits can use to dramatically increase their reach and impact.
Working with partners around the globe, we’re actively expanding these resources outside the US. New initiatives at TechSoup include a program (funded by the Gates Foundation) to help public libraries better maintain their public access computers and an expanded Green IT program that aims to build the market for refurbished computers and other environmentally appropriate solutions. Founded in 1987 (as CompuMentor), we currently have more than 150 staff members and an annual budget of about $18 million.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and contribute to the TechSoup Blog.
- Research and write at 2-4 feature articles per month about technology for an audience of nonprofits.
- Assist the Lead Technology Analyst with new product evaluations as needed.
- Use the site's content-management system to edit and update articles as needed.
- Make small edits and updates around the site as needed.
Required Skills:
- Three to Four years of experience writing and editing professionally.
- Proven ability to write clearly and engagingly on technology subjects for audiences of varying levels of technology expertise.
- A passion for and knowledge of information technology products, protocols, platforms, and techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work with other writers, editors, and technology experts on collaborative projects.
- Knowledge of A.P. Style.
- Ability to manage workload and prioritize tasks.
- Able to be polite, professional, and flexible in the midst of a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work in front of the computer for most of the day.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Understanding of the technology needs of nonprofits and/or public libraries and the challenges in implementing technology solutions that they face.
- Knowledge of Web 2.0 tools.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for emerging technology.
- Experience consulting or working with nonprofit organizations.
- Experience participating in online forums.
- Experience using a content management system.
- International experience a plus.
